Google has officially announced the resolution of a significant logging error that plagued Google Search Console (GSC) for nearly a full year. The technical glitch, which spanned approximately 50 weeks, resulted in inaccurate reporting of key visibility metrics for website owners and digital marketers worldwide.

The Timeline and Scope of the Error

According to Google’s official documentation, the logging issue persisted from May 13, 2025, through April 27, 2026. This extensive window means that for almost an entire year, the data presented in the Search Console Performance reports was compromised.

The error specifically impacted the logging of impressions. Because impressions serve as the foundation for several other calculated metrics, the ripple effect was significant. Users likely observed unnatural decreases in impressions, which subsequently skewed the following data points:

  • Click-Through Rate (CTR): Since CTR is calculated based on clicks divided by impressions, the inaccurate impression count rendered CTR data unreliable.
  • Average Position: Ranking data tied to these impressions was similarly affected.

Crucially, Google confirmed that clicks were not affected by this error. The actual traffic reaching websites remained accurate; only the reporting of how often those sites appeared in search results was flawed.

A ‘Partial’ Fix: The Data Gap Remains

While Google has marked the issue as “resolved,” there is a significant caveat that SEO professionals must keep in mind: the historical data will not be backfilled.

Google has implemented a fix that ensures data logging is accurate moving forward from April 27, 2026. However, the data recorded between May 2025 and April 2026 remains incorrect and will not be retroactively adjusted. John Mueller, a well-known spokesperson for Google Search, confirmed via Bluesky that the fix is strictly forward-looking.

Impact on SEO Strategy and Analysis

For marketers and SEOs conducting year-over-year (YoY) comparisons or auditing performance trends from the past year, this gap presents a major challenge. Any perceived drop in visibility or fluctuations in average position during the affected period should be viewed with extreme skepticism, as they may be the result of a logging error rather than a change in search rankings or content quality.
