In a significant shift for search engine optimization, Google has officially announced the deprecation of FAQ rich results. As of May 7, 2026, the familiar drop-down question-and-answer snippets that once dominated the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) are no longer being displayed. This move marks the final stage of a gradual wind-down that began in 2023, when Google first indicated that FAQ rich results would appear less frequently.

The removal extends beyond the live search interface. Google has outlined a phased decommissioning of reporting tools to help webmasters transition. By June 2026, the FAQ search appearance and rich result reports will be removed from Google Search Console, and support within the Rich Results Test will also cease. Finally, in August 2026, support for FAQ rich results will be fully removed from the Search Console API.

Impact Analysis: Who is Affected?

While the disappearance of these snippets may seem like a major blow to visibility, Google’s representatives suggest the actual impact is limited. John Mueller, a prominent Google Search advocate, clarified via Bluesky that the feature was only ever utilized for a very small set of site types—primarily authoritative government and health-related websites. For the vast majority of websites, the FAQ markup was already being ignored by Google’s algorithms long before this official announcement.

Industry experts, including Glenn Gabe, have already confirmed the disappearance of these snippets in the wild. Recent comparisons of high-authority sites, such as the CDC, show that previously present FAQ snippets have completely vanished from the SERPs.

What Should Website Owners Do Now?

The primary question for SEO professionals is whether to keep or remove existing FAQPage structured data. According to John Mueller, there is no urgent need to change anything. Removing the markup will not penalize a site, but keeping it will not provide any search appearance benefits moving forward.

  • Keep Content On-Page: While the rich result is gone, the FAQ content itself remains valuable for users who visit your page.
