Google Enhances AI Search Experience: Preferred Sources and New Discovery Carousels Roll Out
Google Evolves the AI Search Experience
Google is continuing to refine its artificial intelligence integration within Search, officially rolling out a series of updates to AI Mode and AI Overviews. The primary focus of these updates is to bridge the gap between AI-generated summaries and the original creators of the content, emphasizing trust, transparency, and user preference.
Preferred Sources Integration in AI Mode & AI Overviews
In a strategic move to empower users and reward high-quality publishers, Google is now integrating “Preferred Sources” directly into AI Mode and AI Overviews. This feature allows users to select specific websites or creators they trust, and Google will then clearly label links from these preferred sources within AI-generated responses.
According to Duncan Osborn, Product Manager for Google Search, this integration is designed to help users easily identify content from sources they have already vetted. This is an expansion of a feature previously seen in Top Stories. Google has noted a significant impact from this initiative, stating that users are twice as likely to click through to a Preferred Source. Currently, over 345,000 unique sources have been selected by users globally across all supported languages.
New Interactive Carousels for Real-Time Insights
Beyond source labeling, Google is introducing new visual carousels within AI results to improve the discoverability of timely and diverse content. These carousels are being deployed in two primary forms:
- Developing Topic Carousels: For queries regarding evolving news or trending topics, a prominent carousel will now appear. This feature is intended to make timely articles more visible and will also highlight a user’s Preferred Sources to ensure a blend of reliability and recency.
- Perspectives Carousel: To provide a more human-centric search experience, Google is testing carousels that pull helpful perspectives from online discussions, social media platforms, and community forums. This move acknowledges the value of first-hand experience and community consensus in the search process.
Expansion of the “Highly Cited” Label
Separately from the AI-specific updates, Google is expanding the “Highly Cited” label. Originally introduced in 2022 for Top Stories, this label is now appearing across a broader range of web article links on the standard Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).
The “Highly Cited” designation serves as a signal of authority and trust, indicating that a particular piece of content is frequently referenced by other reputable sources. Furthermore, Google will now explicitly indicate when a specific article references a Highly Cited source, creating a clearer map of information authority on the web.
Implications for Digital Publishers
For SEOs and content creators, these updates signal a shift toward “entity-based trust.” While AI Overviews have raised concerns about traffic cannibalization, the introduction of Preferred Sources and Highly Cited labels provides a new pathway for visibility. By encouraging users to proactively select preferred sources and highlighting cited authority, Google is attempting to maintain a healthy ecosystem where original reporting and expert insights remain valuable.
